The Vegas Cocks & More Bands!
The Reverend has been corresponding with Steve Woods of the Vegas Cocks, who was kind enough to share a few of the band's songs with us. For those of you that don't remember, the Vegas Cocks were a street-smart, mid-90s rock & roll band from Nashville, with an unabashed emphasis on "rock." While the rest of the world was still grooving to the grungy "Seattle sound," the Vegas Cocks were grinding out the sleaze, tunes like "Too Late" and "Cocktail Queen" displaying an unerring sense of rock melody combined with feedback-tinged guitars and powerful rhythms.
"Too Late," says Steve, was the band's vinyl 45, mixed by Paul Mahern and released by indie label Ramona Records out of Indianapolis. It's a very cool pseudo-ballad that finishes big with strident vocals and ringing six-strings. "Three O'Clock Loving" resulted from a development deal with MCA Records that unfortunately went nowhere, the song produced by Brad Circone of the Toll. Steve sent along "Cocktail Queen" just 'cause he liked it, the tune a heady brew of fuzzy vocals and fuzzier guitars that builds to an orgiastic crescendo. The Reverend likee....
I remember getting a demo tape of the Vegas Cocks back during the end days of The Metro and being impressed with the band's chemistry and unique combination of gut-driven hard rock and a spacy, almost psychedelic soundtrack.

Robert Logue of Royal Court Of China and the Shakers was kind enough to loan the project a largish pile of local music publications, from copies of The Metro and Nashville Intelligence Report to more obscure zines like Rick Champion's Peacock Parade and Lee Carr's and Jerry Dale McFadden's Weasel Weekly. I've only managed to dig my way through about half of Robert's stack, but I've found a lot of good stuff to photocopy from these zines, including info on a handful of new bands, listed below, which brings our total to an unheard of 339 bands. Will we reach 350 by the time that I leave town? We'll see....

yo man. keith, for your Nashville rock historical project i have a lot of firsthand information about the punk/hardcore/metal scene i can contribute. i ran an all ages venue for 3 years around 1999 and sing in a band called Look What I Did who have a record out now through combat/koch. i know of a lot of other nashville guys who are significant in even the international underground metal/hardcore scene that might be cool to catalogue. hit me up if you want any information i might have.

Just came across this post by accident. I used to LOVE 'The Toll' featuring Brad Circone. Where'd the guys ever get too? Do you have any rare and/or unreleased stuff by The Toll that you could post on your blog?
