Shake Rattle & Roll #9 (Memphis)

Don't know a heck of a lot about this one...just kind of popped up in the big magic box o' zines that we brought with us from Nashville. Since Shake Rattle & Roll was published in Memphis, my guess is that since I tended to pick up almost any free print object that ran across my path in that day and time, I found this zine at the Tower Records store in Nashville or else I found it in Memphis during one of my trips to the city on the bluff.

There's not a whole lot of content to be found in Shake Rattle & Roll; this March 1993 issue is heavy on local music news and advertising, with only a couple of feature articles, on Sid Selvidge and Disturbance, respectively. There's a column on Memphis recording studios and the bands using them (B.B. King @ Ardent Recording, Rob Jungklas @ Crosstown, George Thorogood & the Destroyers @ Sounds Unreel, etc); a smattering of mainstream record reviews (Mick Jagger, Belly, Carmen Electra, Roseanne Cash & Jellyfish); and a live music calendar and other short columns.

From all appearances – including ads for recording studios, local clubs, record stores and musical instrument retailers – Shake Rattle & Roll covered the Memphis music business in much the same way as Music Row (still) covers the Nashville business scene. Unlike David Ross' comprehensive publication, though, Shake Rattle & Roll seems to fall short, the zine a loose collection of information lacking in an overall editorial perspective and vision.
