Video of the Week: Little Steven’s “St. Valentine’s Day”

Although previous versions of this great song rock the house (especially the Twylight Zones, from the soundtrack for the David Chase film Not Fade Away), Little Steven’s take on last year’s Soulfire LP rings true, his aging voice and weary delivery bringing a lovely sense of gravitas to his lyrics.

Long working in the shadows of a legend like Bruce Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt doesn't get enough credit as a great songwriter in his own right. Aside from the delicate lovelorn lyrics here, there are concepts within the song that lesser scribes could only hope to create (the “your lifelong documentary” line still gets me).

The entire song is a lengthy story of a fascinating romantic relationship the equal of Springsteen’s classics like “Thunder Road” or “Born To Run.” The song is included on Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul’s Soulfire Live! album, released today, so what are you waiting for? Get it!
